Harput Castle’s Fetih Mescidi Reopens for Friday Prayers

The restored mosque held its first Friday prayer, and more castle buildings will follow.

The Fetih Mescidi (Conquest Mosque) in Harput Castle, Elazığ, has reopened for worship after restoration. According to SonDakika, which cites the İHA news agency, the first Friday prayer was held there on 23 October 2026. The building dates to 1086, and officials say more structures in the castle will follow.

Elazığ Governor Numan Hatipoğlu spoke about the project after the prayer. His remarks suggest a wider plan to bring the old castle quarter back to life.

What the governor said about the Fetih Mescidi restoration

Hatipoğlu said the mosque was first opened with the Minister of Culture and Tourism in attendance. The Friday prayer was the first held there since the reopening. He placed the original construction of the mosque in the 1080s.

The governor said the building served as a place of worship until the 1900s. After the castle was emptied of residents, he said, it fell into ruin. When he took office, he added, his first instruction after inspecting the castle was to revive it.

The Provincial Special Administration (İl Özel İdaresi), the local government body that carries out public works in a Turkish province, did the restoration. The mosque appeared after archaeological excavations in the castle.

An original-style build in Harput Castle

Hatipoğlu said the team rebuilt the mosque in its original form, with stone walls and an earthen roof. A toprak dam is a traditional flat roof covered with packed soil. He also said the carpets were collected pieces, not a standard new-mosque set, to keep the historic feel.

He described the mosque as a key symbol of the castle. In his words, a mosque is one of the most important marks of a conquest in any region. This is the governor’s interpretation, not a finding from the excavation.

Next in line: a school and a commander’s house

The governor said the Provincial Special Administration is preparing projects for other buildings in the castle. He named a mektep (a traditional school), a commander’s house and several other houses. The aim, he said, is to restore them in the same style.

No dates or budgets for these projects appeared in the report. Officials still have to complete the planning. Hatipoğlu said he wants the castle to become a living place that visitors enjoy.

Why Harput matters to history readers

Harput is an old settlement above the plain of Elazığ in eastern Türkiye. Archaeological work at the castle has run for some time. Earlier reports from late 2025 said the mosque’s restoration project had won approval from the monuments board.

For readers who follow Turkish historical drama, the story is a reminder that many period sites are still being studied and rebuilt. The castle’s own history is separate from any screen portrayal. The 1086 date comes from the official statements reported here, so readers should treat it as the date the authorities give.

The next stage is the planning of the school and commander’s house restorations.
