Madonna in a Fur Coat Film: Sedat Inci Set to Direct
Sedat Inci is reported to direct the film version of Sabahattin Ali's novel.
Sabahattin Ali’s novel “Madonna in a Fur Coat” (Kürk Mantolu Madonna) is being developed as a feature film, according to Türkiye Today. The outlet reports that Sedat Inci will direct. For readers who know the book, the Madonna in a Fur Coat film is the clearest sign yet that this long-discussed adaptation is taking shape.
Many details are still open. No cast has been announced, and no filming date or release format has been confirmed.
From digital series to Madonna in a Fur Coat film
The project was first announced in 2024 as a digital series. At that stage, Enes Ateş was named as director, and reports described a German-Turkish co-production. Türkiye Today now says the plan has been reworked into a film with a different director.
The film will be produced by Fikri Harika Production and Sacakli Film Studios. It is described as an international co-production. Part of the shoot is planned with Babelsberg Studios in Berlin, and the rest in Türkiye.
What is still unconfirmed
Casting talks are continuing, according to the report, and the lineup is expected to be revealed soon. The roles of Raif Efendi and Maria Puder, the novel’s two central characters, have not been assigned publicly.
Filming has no start date. It is also unclear whether the finished film will reach cinemas or a streaming platform. Until the producers confirm more, these points remain open.
Why the novel matters to readers
Sabahattin Ali first published the book in 1943. It has stayed on Turkish bestseller lists ever since, and it has been translated into many languages. Its story moves between Ankara and Berlin, which fits the planned split between Türkiye and Germany.
The adaptation is not the first attempt to bring the novel to the screen. An older Diken report mentioned an earlier film project involving Ay Yapım and The Weinstein Company, which was suspended. The current project is separate.
Readers should wait for an official statement from the producers on the cast and release plan. That announcement is expected to settle the biggest remaining questions.
