Izmir’s Painters Show 66 Works on the City’s Layered Past
IZKA's 20th anniversary show runs at Kulturpark through 30 December.
An exhibition of 66 paintings by 33 artists is giving visitors in Izmir a painted portrait of the Turkish port city’s long history. The show, “Izmir’s Painters, Painters’ Izmir,” opened on 14 October and runs through 30 December at the Mehmet Tuzum Kizilcan Art Gallery in Kulturpark.
The Izmir Development Agency (IZKA) organized the exhibition to mark its 20th anniversary. According to Türkiye Today, the preparation took about a year.
What the Izmir painting exhibition shows
The 33 artists use different techniques and approaches. Some paint the city’s streets, squares, historic buildings and coastline. Others focus on the marks Izmir has left on their own memories and the emotional ties they have formed with it.
The works cover several periods of the city’s past, its cultural layers and its everyday life. They also reflect Izmir’s multicultural character from different angles.
The show does not offer one official story of the city. Instead, it presents what the report calls a multivoiced portrait, shaped by each artist’s own experience.
Part of the Memory Izmir project
The exhibition belongs to IZKA’s Memory Izmir project and to the agency’s wider work on urban culture and the arts. Its stated aim is to preserve Izmir’s cultural memory and pass it on to future generations.
The report says Izmir’s history stretches back about 8,500 years. That figure comes from the source and is not an independent archaeological claim. The ancient city is better known to many readers as Smyrna, and Izmir later became an important Ottoman port. A painting show cannot serve as historical evidence, but it can show how local artists remember and interpret that long record.
Visiting details
The gallery is in Kulturpark, a central cultural park in Izmir. The exhibition stays open until 30 December. Readers planning a visit should check the gallery’s current opening hours with the organizers, as the source does not list them.
